Located on the grounds of Confederate General Bradley T. Johnson’s former residence, the North Avenue Market opened its doors in 1928, proudly promoting itself as “Baltimore’s largest enclosed sanitary market.” At its inception, the bustling venue featured twelve vibrant retail shops and a lively 22-lane bowling alley, quickly evolving to host over 200 grocery vendors, each contributing to the market’s rich tapestry of flavors and goods. Unfortunately, the shadow of the Great Depression and the impacts of World War II significantly diminished its customer base, culminating in a devastating six-alarm fire in 1968 that forced its decline.
In 2024, Cross Street Partners stepped in to take on the role of property management for this storied building. Their mission is not only to oversee a diverse group of tenants but also to reposition the market as a flourishing hub for cultural expression, creativity, and business ventures, rekindling its legacy as a community gathering place.
